Kodak at Photokina 2008
Interactive event design
Photokina is the world’s largest tradeshow for the photographic and imaging industries, happening every 2 years in Cologne, Germany, with over 160,000 visitors and almost 1,500 exhibitors in 2008. Having established a level of trust with Mirror Show Management’s Kodak client due to the success of their booth at Photokina 2006, I coordinated the efforts of multiple teams (exhibit designers, graphic designers, and a production company) to provide Kodak with a massive multimedia installation, imaginative photo sets, product demonstration environments and on-brand booth design that helped attract attendees and keep them engaged with Kodak products.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDED:
- Art direction and graphic design of exhibit
- Model selection, attire and makeup
- Direction of makeup artist and models on show site
- Conception and design of storyboards, art direction of multimedia production
- Photo set and interior “home” environment design
PHOTO SETS
Two photo sets created “in the round” featured tethered Kodak cameras available for demonstration, connected via bluetooth to other local Kodak-enabled devices such as printers. The set contained live models posing in an eye-catching, unique and attractive manner, taking inspiration from high-end retail window displays such as Bergdorf Goodman, Selfridges, and other European boutiques and chains.
The sets gained a lot of attention at the event, winning “Best Photokina Models of 2008” from Digital Camera Info, and driving booth engagement.

MULTIMEDIA DESIGN
Large-scale multimedia walls flanked the entrance to Kodak’s exhibit, with seamless plasmas and glass walls that were alternately projection surfaces and transparent windows into the staged “home” environments, depending on timing. I designed the content of the display in coordination with Kodak and a production team at Pacific Media.
INTERIOR DESIGN
Behind the projection glass were home environments, staged to showcase the connectivity of Kodak’s consumer product line. Selecting furniture and finishes from Uniplan’s large resource library, as well as sourced from local European stores, I designed the interior environments to create a clean, modern setting that would feature the products without distraction. Although not shown here, I was also responsible for the graphic design of the exhibit including all elevations.
