Kodak Case Study

Evolution of an account over 5 years

In working with Kodak as an art director, producer and graphic designer, I was part of a core team that grew the Kodak account from simple exhibit design to true experience design. This team introduced new technology and immersive environments into the way Kodak exhibits, which resulted in a yearly increase in press coverage, booth traffic and show sales, as well as happy clients.

Kodak approached MSM with a challenge: they wanted to have a strong show presence at Print 2009, the largest graphics communications exhibition in the US, without bringing any of their heavy printing equipment. In the role of executive producer, I worked with multiple teams (Obscura Digital on interactive, Partners & Napier on the graphic design, MSM on the exhibit design) to create three unique digital experiences that allowed Kodak to provide over 25,000 visitors with solutions customized for their needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interactive design research
  • Hired interactive agency
  • Art direction and graphic design
  • Presented to multiple levels of Kodak management
  • Assisted account and project management

CES 2005-2010

The International Consumer Electronics Show, considered one of the major technology-related trade shows, is where many companies debut their latest products. While Kodak maintains the same booth space (100 ft x 110 ft) year after year, the goal is to up the WOW-factor each time and draw more media attention to Kodak’s newest products. The booth experiences we designed over the course of 5 years evolved from immersive “home” environments showcasing the range and connectivity of Kodak products, to large-scale multimedia installations and custom-built touchscreen experiences that interacted with Kodak product. With that evolution, my role grew from graphic design, to art direction, to multimedia production.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Art direction and graphic design
  • Design of photo set and “home” demo environments
  • Played a hybrid role of project manager/executive producer in coordinating the efforts of multiple agencies
  • Direction of multimedia and interactive production

Photokina 2006-2008

Photokina is the world’s largest trade show for the photographic and imaging industries, happening every 2 years in Cologne, Germany. In 2006, Kodak was launching a new line of digital cameras that were small, sleek, and unique with features like dual-lens technology. To unleash the “power of pictures”, a fashion theme was selected, complete with an elevated catwalk though the booth, and models wearing custom-made Kodak couture created with picture-related items and Kodak products. This experience lent itself to interaction and product demonstration, and was supported by themed alcoves throughout the booth hosted by personalities trained to demonstrate hero products.

In 2008, building on the success of that experience, Kodak requested a similar fashion-related booth draw. I worked together with multiple teams to provide Kodak with a large-scale multimedia installation, imaginative photo sets with live models, product demonstration environments and on-brand booth design that helped attract attendees and keep them engaged with Kodak.
